      • Greetings from Jerusalem! Summer 2010
        07/09/10

It is such a privilege to be here in Yerushalayim!

This is the completion of a journey that began 5 summers ago!

I had a sabbatical coming that I could not find a way to take. Three months to renew my rabbinate and refresh my learning – had been included in my contract an

I had a chance to post a live message to all our friends back in Roslyn -- I hope you'll take a moment and check it out at:

      • Mt. of Olives Tiyul
        07/21/09
This morning our Hartman Rabbinic Fellowship group took a tiyul (hike) from the top of Har Hazeitim (Mt of Olives). We met there at 7:00 AM which necessitated going to a 5:45 AM minyan! You can find a minyan here at almost any time you want. It was a wonderful walk from the top of the Mt. of Olives

        07/19/09
Without a doubt my greatest challenge while I am here in Israel has been to find time to sit and write for this blog. I go from early in the morning until late at night and it is just a struggle to find the time to sit and think and write. But I am determined to bring you up to date.

        07/12/09
So now let me take a step back. We arrived in Israel this past Monday. We had spent several days before coming to Israel with our daughter Dina and her husband Daniel in Philadelphia celebrating the birth of their son and our first grandchild. His name is Aiven Gray Relles – Eliyahu Rimon.

        07/09/09
How wonderful it is to be walking the streets of Jerusalem once again. There is something different about the rhythm of life and the pace of things here that is so alive and vibrant. Everything seems to happen here with a greater intensity.

It is also nice to be back at the Hartman Inst

        07/24/08
As my studies here in Jerusalem come to a close we are beginning to prepare for our return to the States.

The final few days have been no less remarkable than the previous few weeks. Our last week of studies included classes with Donniel Hartman in the morning and Melila Hellner-Eshed

        07/18/08
So much to share. The days fly by each one packed from morning to evening. Rather than talk about my courses this week, I thought I might use this entry to refer to some of the many other activities that are always swirling around and occupying our time.

For example I am sure you have all

        07/14/08
I hope you believe me when I begin each entry with an apology for not having written more or more often. My intentions are honorable-- it is just that when I get a free moment the idea of sitting in front of the computer and typing is, well not the first thing I am eager to do.

        So re

        07/04/08
Happy 4th of July -- I know this is a day of barbecues and fireworks back home -- here it is just another Friday!

The biggest challenge of this blog is finding time to write it! My schedule continues to be quite full.

Take yesterday for example. I was at the Hartman Institute

        06/29/08
It is wonderful to be back in Israel. We arrived on Thursday, with barely time to get settled in time for Shabbat and yet in the brief time we have been here we have managed to: try and catch up on our sleep, attend the funeral of the wife of my revered teacher Rabbi David Weiss Halivni, had our fi

        12/24/07
Our trip is off to a great start. It is hard to believe we left only a few days ago because we have done so much – our days are full of activity, facts and of course a great deal of laughter. In addition, because of our days have been so long, it has been hard to find time to get online to post, b

It is hard to believe that the month is rapidly coming to a close! So much left to do. We just got back from the reading of Aicha (The Book of Lamentations) to begin the Fast of Tisha B'Av . We went to the Tayelet - the beautiful promenade that overlooks the Old C

It is hard to believe we are getting ready for our second Shabbat – but so it is!

Well, happy July 4 everyone! It is always strange being in Israel for an American holiday. To be in Israel is to share a rhythm of Jewish life and Israeli life that you miss by living in the States – but, it also means missing the rhythm of life we have come to be frami

We all support the major causes like UJA, JTS, Israel bonds, JNF, JDC etc etc – as well we should. These are the
