Two such Americans were Martha and Waitstill Sharp, originally sent to Prague as part of a relief mission. But when Germany invaded in 1939, they made a choice that would save countless lives—they pivoted to helping Jews and dissidents escape. Dr. Dwork will put the Sharps’ remarkable story in the spotlight from the bima.
They were not the only ones. In her book, Déborah Dwork also follows the riveting stories of rescue workers operating in five major cities as the refugee crisis exploded across Europe—Vilna, Shanghai, Marseille, and Lisbon. Hunted by Nazi agents, these brave individuals moved in secrecy, spiriting people across borders and into safety.
