2019-2020 Sisterhood Mission Statement

The Sisterhood of Temple Beth Sholom is a three-time recipient of the Emerald Award, the highest level of recognition awarded by Women’s League for Conservative Judaism. Our chapter offers social events, programs and an array of classes to encourage the women in our synagogue to enhance their knowledge and enjoyment of Judaism while developing and deepening friendships with other like-minded women. Also very important to our Sisterhood is helping others through volunteer projects. Last year, Sisterhood women served meals to disabled adults and seniors at a nearby Jewish community center. We also host a luncheon with entertainment for seniors at our own synagogue many times during the year. In addition, we support the Torah Fund, which helps educate our movement’s clergy and lay leaders, and other Jewish charities, including UJA-Federation of New York, Israel Bonds and the Jewish Theological Seminary.

Our Sisterhood also includes the Z’havah Group, which offers programs and hands-on activities such as crafts and cooking classes for our younger members, many of whom have children in our Early Childhood Center or Religious School. These women also attend our Sisterhood dinners, classes and annual Sisterhood Shabbat, at which Sisterhood members participate in the service.

Most Sisterhood meetings take place on weeknights and there is usually at least one program each month. Some of our Z’havah events are scheduled during the school day. The Florence Meyer Adult Education Program runs on Tuesday mornings and includes Bible Study, two levels of Conversational Hebrew, and a monthly Lunch and Learn program with guest speakers. There’s a new Torah Trope mini-course on eight Thursday mornings for those interested in learning to chant from the Torah. There’s also a once monthly Tuesday evening Essentials of Judaism class that discusses principles and practices of Conservative Judaism and includes Bible study. All of our classes are open to both genders and to non-Sisterhood members.

Sisterhood also sponsors weekly bridge classes on Monday and Tuesday mornings from September to June with acclaimed teacher Roberta Salob and a fall canasta lessons with certified Canasta League of America teachers.
