Join the community at TBS or tune in from home for filmmaker & photographer David Kaufman presenting live from Canada.

Step into the haunting beauty and enduring memory of Eastern European Jewish life before the Holocaust through a powerful evening of photography, history and reflection.

Drawing from his acclaimed book, The Posthumous Landscape, David Kaufman presents striking photographic plates of synagogues, cemeteries, neighborhoods and communal spaces that once pulsed with Jewish life. These images reveal not only what was destroyed, but what still speaks—through architecture, memory and the quiet persistence of place.

With decades of documentary storytelling behind the lens, Kaufman illuminates a Jewish civilization that shaped Eastern Europe and traces the afterlives of its sacred and communal spaces—some preserved, some repurposed, others slowly returning to the earth, yet held fast in these pages.

This program has broad appeal, not only to our synagogue community but also to students and educators engaged in Jewish Studies, Holocaust education and anti-hate work among people of diverse backgrounds, and all are welcome to participate. Attend in person at Temple Beth Sholom or join virtually from the comfort of your home.

The Posthumous Landscape is a tribute to a world lost—and a lens through which to understand our present.

See the past. Understand the present. Confront hate.
