A.W.E. Featuring An Evening with Author Jacques Berlinerblau

An evening with Georgetown University Professor of Jewish Civilization and Acclaimed Author and Commentator, Jacques Berlinerblau: Can We Laugh at That? Comedy in a Conflicted Age

When did telling a joke become a risky business? Comedians the world over are experiencing strong reactions from some audiences. Public disagreement triggered by humorists is not a recent development.

But now comedians are being hounded by criminal investigations and civil suits, forced off media outlets, and/or experiencing acts of intimidation and violence. It’s more than just cancel culture!

Hear about the surprisingly high stakes and risks that comedians face in an age of social media and global digital access, as you listen to Jacques’ darkly witty examinations of American comedians as well as humorists in Europe and Africa.

You’ll leave knowing:

• The current climate in the United States: who is being harassed and how it’s happening

• “Comedic controversies” in other liberal democracies

• Humorists and jokes in non-democratic spaces

Delight in the stories from Georgetown’s Jacques Berlinerblau, Professor of Jewish Civilization, about the world’s comedic storytellers.
