British-Iranian Journalist, Author & Israel’s International Spokesperson at the United Nations, Jonathan Harounoff
British-Iranian Journalist, Author & Israel’s International Spokesperson at the United Nations, Jonathan Harounoff will speak on Shabbat, March 7th
Join the Congregation for a powerful and timely program on Iran’s #WomanLifeFreedom uprising.
In September 2022, the death of 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian woman Mahsa (Jina) Amini at the hands of Iran’s morality police ignited the most significant challenge to the Islamic Republic in its 46-year history. What began as outrage over one woman’s death became a nationwide uprising led by women and girls demanding freedom, dignity, and an end to a brutal regime.
Women burned their headscarves, cut their hair in defiance, shut down industries, and tore down symbols of authoritarian rule—chanting the now-iconic call: Woman, Life, Freedom. Though violently suppressed, the uprising continues today through ongoing acts of resistance inside Iran and throughout the global Iranian diaspora.
Mr. Harounoff will speak from the bima, sharing this story through a journalistic lens shaped by his own heritage and deep cultural connection to Iran. His presentation offers insight into both the origins of the uprising and the continuing struggle of the Iranian people to break free from oppression.
Understand the uprising. Hear the story. Engage in dialogue.
The program will be followed by a special kiddush luncheon, and a post-kiddush discussion in the Chapel, led by Ghazal Mizrahi, with time for questions and conversation.
