Distinguished Journalist & Author Cindy Schweich Handler and Family Historian Harry Handler

Thursday, November 6, 2025 - 7:45 pm

Location: Temple Beth Sholom

Award-winning journalist Cindy Schweich Handler, whose work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, and other national outlets, joins her husband, family historian Harry Handler, to share a remarkable journey into their family’s hidden past. When Harry uncovered a cache of letters, WWI diaries, secret escape plans for top Nazis, and vivid character portraits of history’s most notorious figures, the couple realized they were holding an untold chapter of world history.

At the center of it all was Harry’s grandfather, Oppenheimer—a wealthy Jewish Berliner decorated with two Iron Crosses in World War I who fled the tightening grip of the Third Reich in 1938, enlisted in the U.S. Army at age 45, and rose to become General Eisenhower’s trusted legal aide and translator. His daring journey helped lay the groundwork for a sustainable postwar democracy, proving how one determined voice can shape a more hopeful world.
