The Social Action Committee and The Arthur Goldberg Social Action & Cultural Arts Program Fund invite you to be part of the SOLUTION for Gun Violence Prevention!
On July 18, 2022 at 8 PM, Rabbi Menachem Creditor will join us for the first session of this two-part series to explore the topic of Jewish Tradition and Gun Violence. As gun technology has developed, and in the midst of the current pace of American Gun Violence, what wisdom and guidance can be gained from the texts of Jewish tradition? We will also share a presentation by Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy.
Rabbi Menachem Creditor
Rabbi Menachem Creditor, the Pearl and Ira Meyer Scholar in Residence at UJA-Federation New York, is the founder of Rabbis Against Gun Violence. An acclaimed author and scholar, he was named by Newsweek as one of the fifty most influential rabbis in America. His many books and 6 albums of original music include “A Year of Torah” and the COVID-era 2-volume anthology “When We Turned Within.” He and his wife Neshama Carlebach live in New York, where they are raising their five children.
Carolyn McCarthy
On December 7, 1993, Carolyn McCarthy’s husband, Dennis, was killed, and her son, Kevin, was severely injured at the Merilon Avenue Station of the LIRR in Garden City. The gunman opened fire killing 6 and wounding 19. McCarthy responded to the crime by launching a campaign for more stringent gun control that eventually propelled her to Congress in 1996.
During her time in Congress, McCarthy was described as the fiercest gun-control advocate in Congress.
Please join us on July 25, 2022 at 8 PM for Session Two as we continue the conversation and host New York State Senator Anna M. Kaplan; Assembly Member Charles D. Lavine; ADA Lee E. Genser – Unit Chief/Firearms Suppression and Intelligence Unit, Narcotics, Firearms and Gangs Bureau, Nassau County District Attorney’s Office; Michelle Schimel – Executive Board Member of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, Former NYS Assemblywoman, 16th Assembly District.
