Heroes and Victims in the Bible with Zahava Rosenfeld

As a result of the world pandemic in the past few months, the word “hero” has been heard more frequently in the media. From frontline medical workers to grocery delivery people, heroes are those who stand out for their actions in a time of strife, and are worthy of our admiration. But at the same time, there have been many victims. In light of the present situation, it is interesting to search our ancient texts and examine some heroes (and victims) of the past. In this course, we will define what makes a hero, the context in which they exist, and we’ll focus on specific characters in Biblical times, both heroes and victims. These individuals stand out for their exemplary actions and inspire us with their courageous conduct. Some examples include: Hagar, Joseph, Moses, Yiftach, and many more.
