Meet Cindy Handler, Author of the Amazing True Story “A German Jew’s Triumph”
Meet Cindy Handler, Author of the Amazing True Story A German Jew’s Triumph in-person at Temple Beth Sholom.
Oppenheimer was a wealthy Jewish Berliner who left the World War I battlefield with two Iron Crosses, who fled the Third Reich in mid-1938, joined basic training in the U.S. Army at 45 and ultimately became General Eisenhower’s legal aide and translator, tasked with helping to build a sustainable postwar democracy. An untold David-and-Goliath story, demonstrating how one person can help forge a more hopeful future.
Oppenheimer’s remarkable story remained untold until his grandson, Harry Handler, discovered letters and documents stuffed into a closet. These included his WWI diaries, an unknown escape plan for top Nazis and up-close character portraits of history’s villains. Harry enlisted his wife, Cindy, a journalist for Gannett whose work has appeared in The New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today and other national outlets, to tell his grandfather’s amazing story to the world.
